Viewers will find some great musical performances in the “Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo”: Kyle’s “I’m a Lonely Jew on Christmas” lament; Mr. Hankey’s “Howdy-Ho”; Chef’s original, yuletide song (as only Chef can do); Cartman’s “Kyle’s Mom Is a Bitch”; and the finale chorus of the “Mr. Hankey” theme. While the town works to put on a “nondenominational, non-offensive” school play, Kyle tries to convince family and friends that yes, indeed, the Christmas turd in a red Santa hat that sang and danced in his bathroom is real. If “Mr. Hankey” is the South Park musical, then “Tom’s Rhinoplasty” is the vomiting special. Teacher Mr. Garrison takes a leave of absence to have plastic surgery while the good looks of his substitute, Ms. Ellen, send the boys reeling into lovey-dovey land. As they compete to woo Ms. Ellen during Valentine’s Day season, Wendy Testaburger’s jealousy festers and grows into an explosively funny climax (due in part to the twists on Ms. Ellen’s character). –Karen Karleski

It’s hard to believe Ridley Scott’s handsome epic won’t become the cinematic touchstone of the Crusades for years to come. Kingdom of Heaven is greater than the sum of its parts, delivering a vital, mostly engrossing tale following Balian (Orlando Bloom), a lonely French blacksmith who discovers he’s a noble heir and takes his father’s (Liam Neeson) place in the center of the universe circa 1184: Jerusalem. Here, grand battles and backdoor politics are key as Scott and first-time screenwriter William Monahan fashion an excellent storyline to tackle the centuries-long conflict. Two forward-thinking kings, Baldwin (Edward Norton in an uncredited yet substantial role) and Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), hold an uneasy truce between Christians (who hold the city) and Muslims while factions champ at the bit for blood. There are good and evildoers on both sides, with the Knights Templar taking the brunt of the blame; Balian plans to find his soul while protecting Baldwin and the people. The look of the film, as nearly everything is from Scott, is impressive: his CGI-infused battle scenes rival the LOTR series and, with cinematographer John Mathieson, create postcard beauty with snowy French forests and the vast desert (filmed in Morocco and Spain). An excellent supporting cast, including Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and David Thewlis, also help make the head and heart of the film work. Many critics pointed out that Bloom doesn’t have the gravitas of Russell Crowe in the lead (then again, who does?), but it’s the underdeveloped character and not the actor that hurts the film and impacts its power. Balian isn’t given much more to do than be sullen and give an occasional big speech, alongside his perplexing abilities for warfare tactics and his wandering moral compass (whose sole purpose seems to be to put a love scene in the movie). Note: all the major characters except Neeson’s are based on fact, but many are heavily fictionalized. –Doug Thomas

For budget-minded cineastes, this two-disc set of Orson Welles films is a welcome addition to any DVD library, even if it falls short of its claims. While the accompanying documentary demonstrates that The Stranger, The Trial, and Welles’s 1934 silent short Hearts of Age have been restored, source materials are not specified, inviting speculation that the films were digitally “cleaned” from video sources in the public domain. The films do sound better than ever with a subtle 5.1-channel remastering, and the visual quality is good but hardly pristine; Milestone Video’s DVD of The Trial presents a crisper, sharper image.

Those quibbles aside, the set’s strengths do make for an acceptable and affordable means to appreciate Welles’s visual ingenuity, stylized by cinematographer Russell Metty in Welles’s conventional Nazi-manhunt thriller The Stranger, and by Edmond Richard in the brilliant, budget-constrained production of Kafka’s The Trial. The films are excellent, and apart from critic Jeffrey Lyons’s flaccid commentary tracks, this package treats them with all due respect. –Jeff Shannon

In 1978 Italy, anarchy is in the air as the Red Brigades keep the country in a state of terror. Reporter David (Andrew McCarthy) moves blithely among the mayhem; after all, he’s an American citizen and untouchable, right? When the manuscript for his political novel, patterned after the Brigades, falls into the wrong hands, it draws the unwelcome attentions of the Brigades, the police, and aggressive American photojournalist Allison (Sharon Stone) and lands David in hot water. Director John Frankenheimer took an overworked plot and made the best of it, though McCarthy is a bit puny as David. As would be expected in a Frankenheimer effort, though, the action segments shine with lithe editing and Frankenheimer’s instincts for composition and camera work. The riots and chase segments make use of Rome’s cityscape, calling to mind Euro-thrillers of the period. Stone is compelling as the foolhardy photographer, with some torrid sex scenes with McCarthy. Though not on a par with The Manchurian Candidate or Seven Days in May, Year of the Gun is a decent action film that goes a long way toward capturing the political and social chaos that was ’70s Italy. –Jerry Renshaw
